pCANTON — St. Lawrence County Chief Assistant District Attorney David A. Haggard is resigning from his position./ppMr. Haggard, who has served as the county’s chief ADA since April 2014, said in a text message that leaving the position at the beginning of May will “allow me the opportunity to pursue future ambitions.”/ppMr. Haggard did not elaborate further on his decision to leave the chief ADA position, one that District Attorney Mary E. Rain fought with the county legislature long and hard to successfully obtain a salary increase from $80,816 to $98,575./pp“I have felt privileged to serve the people of St. Lawrence County as a prosecutor,” Mr. Haggard added in the text. /ppMs. Rain said the decision came following months of discussions./pp“Dave and I have discussed for several months the possibility of his leaving the office,” Ms. Rain said in a text. “I support him in his decision to move on.”/ppShe also did not respond to requests for further elaboration on Mr. Haggard’s decision to leave./ppOnce he leaves, Assistant District Attorney Frank Cositore has agreed to take his place. Mr. Cositore stepped down from his position as Malone town justice on June 13, 2014, citing family obligations./ppAt the time Ms. Rain announced Mr. Haggard’s appointment to the position in January 2014, she said he took some convincing to take the chief assistant position. She had him in mind from the very start, but she said he had declined her offer several times. /ppPrior to his position in the district attorney’s office, Mr. Haggard concentrated his practice for the previous 10 years in criminal defense, driving-while-intoxicated defense, family law and civil litigation./p
