pMALONE — Folks dressed in costumes, conversations about comic books and superheroes and a display of artwork. It’s all coming to Malone as part of the 2016 Winter Carnival./ppArea residents Megan Manson and Casey Degon have organized what they say is northern Franklin County’s first comic convention. The event will be held in conjunction with this year’s Winter Carnival on Sunday, Jan. 31, in the Adirondack Room at Mo’s Pub and Grill on U.S. Route 11./pp“Comic cons are special events with special guests — artists, writers, voice actors — people selling comics and others,” Manson explained. The events often attract fans who turn out costumed as their favorite superhero or comic book character in what is often referred to as cosplay./ppComic cons are a great venue for artists, particularly those who do illustrations, to showcase their work to an appreciative audience, Manson said. Artists, including student artists venturing into the commercial world for the first time, will have the opportunity to display and sell their work at tables they can rent at the event, she said./ppThe Winter Carnival comic con will feature three special guests — two of whom have close ties to the Malone area./ppOne is Franklin Academy English teacher Marc Spicer, who has written a book titled “Saviors Among Us: Situation Critical.” The book is set in the region, Manson said./pp“It is a book about superheroes living in the north country,” Manson said. “The premise of the book is set in Massena, and Malone is mentioned.” /ppThe other guest with north country connections is David Monette, an author and artist from Plattsburgh. His new book is titled “The Zombie Axiom.” Monette also has a history with the card game “Magic: The Gathering.”/ppThe third featured guest is Jonathan Haeffner from Odessa, in the Finger Lakes area. He is the artist on Nicktoon’s “Alien Dawn.” He is also a colorist on the AMC Web comics “Breaking Bad,” “Turn,” “Better Call Saul” and “Into The Badlands.”/ppManson said members of the Ekrub players, who stage the medieval fair Krebashia Kingdom, and a prominent cosplayer who appears as the Arrow, the television version of DC Comics’ Green Arrow, also will be there./ppThe featured exhibitor for the event is Medusa Comics and Cards from Plattsburgh. /pp“They will be selling comic books, comic products, board games and card games. Demonstrations will also be provided,” Manson said. /ppRaffles will also be held during the event. Manson will be donating three art books to be raffled off. Manson said the books — which feature the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the characters from the Disney film “Frozen,” and the Legend of Korra — are geared toward children. She said she wants to make this donation since it was these types of books that helped her to learn how to draw and pursue art./ppIn addition, two awards will be given away for those attendees who appear in costume. The categories will be for ages 13 and under and 14 and above. /ppAdmission will be charged for the event, which will benefit the Malone Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $4 for those 6-17 and seniors over the age of 65, and $8 for ages 18 to 64. Children 5 and under will be admitted free. Doors open at 11 a.m./ppThe family friendly event “will be something fun for the community,” Mason said./ppFor more information, email malonecomiccon@gmail.com./p
