Town of Croghan holding 175th anniversary events April 9

pBEAVER FALLS — The town of Croghan will celebrate 175 years on April 9 with a reception and presentation on the military hero after whom it was named./pp“We’re looking forward to it,” said Mary M. Sweeney, the town’s historian./ppA reception for local officials and dignitaries will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the town municipal building on Route 126. It will include refreshments, historical displays and a stamp cancellation./ppSome letters and paperwork from the family of Benjamin Bachman, who served as town highway superintendent in the early 1990s, will also be presented to the town, Mrs. Sweeney said./ppThen, the celebration will move to the Beaver River Central School District auditorium for a program from 12:45 to 4 p.m./ppBrian Cushing, the program coordinator for Historic Locust Grove in Louisville, Ky., will serve as guest speaker, providing a presentation on town namesake Col. George Croghan, who served in the War of 1812./ppLocust Grove is a historic home museum that was Col. Croghan’s boyhood home, and Mr. Cushing — who holds a degree in history with a focus in sociology from the University of Louisville — has been researching the man for the last 10 years, according to a town release./ppSeveral other speakers will also briefly reminisce and talk about various historical topics from this northern Lewis County town. /ppAmong the tentative speakers are Charlotte Beagle, Dorrie Boliver, Glen Gagnier, Gladys Moshier, Ed Widrick and Jim and Diane Wright./ppShe credited planning committee members Ruth Ann Hammond, Neil Keib, John and Karen Jones, Janice Crofoot, Evelyn Turck, John Farney and deputy historian Laurie Walseman with making the day possible, as well as the Town Council for its support./ppThe town of Croghan was formed on April 5, 1841./pp“Why the name Croghan was used is not known other than his military accomplishments were recognized during William Henry Harrison’s presidential campaign in 1840,” the town website states./ppFor more information, visit www.townofcroghan.com./p
