Ogdensburg city manager touts more transparency; some councilors object

pOGDENSBURG — The public will have more access to information contained in weekly City Council updates following a policy shift announced Monday by City Manager Sarah Purdy, although a majority of councillors said they oppose the move toward more openness./ppMs. Purdy told the council that she plans to begin forwarding elected officials two separate weekly updates, one containing information that is disclosable to the public and press, and the other with confidential information allowed to be shielded under state Freedom of Information laws./ppThe shift away from the city’s policy of shielding all of the weekly update information from public scrutiny came following a recent Freedom of Information request by the Ogdensburg Journal seeking access to portions of the council update.She said the public portion of the council update will be published on the city’s website./ppMs. Purdy’s decision was welcomed by Deputy Mayor Michael D. Morley and Councillor Brian R. Mitchell./ppBut city councillors Daniel E. Skamperle, Jennifer Stevenson, David G. Price and Timothy P. Davis disapproved of the city manager’s move to make the inner workings of the council more transparent, fearing that the information could somehow be misused./p
