Potsdam meth lab discovered after domestic dispute investigation

pPOTSDAM — The report of a possible domestic dispute Tuesday afternoon led village police to the discovery of a methamphetamine lab in a village home./ppPolice on Tuesday charged Stephanie L. Volz, 26, of 79½ Elm St., Apt. A, and Zachary D. Linsky, 23, of Norwood, each with a count of felony third-degree criminal manufacture of methamphetamine. Mr. Linsky was also charged with second-degree criminal contempt./ppAbout 12:50 p.m., at Ms. Volz’s Elm Street residence, police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance of “screaming with some kind of pounding on the wall,” and located Mr. Linsky and another man who police did not name, leaving the rear of the apartment, Potsdam Police Lt. Mark R. Murray said./ppMr. Linsky, who was taken into custody because there was an order of protection barring him from being near Ms. Volz, complained of a chemical burn on his arm and said Ms. Volz threw lye at him, Mr. Murray said. He was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he was treated./ppWhen he returned to Ms. Volz’s residence for additional investigation, Mr. Murray said he noticed a haze and became overwhelmed with a noxious feeling. /ppPotsdam Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene and evacuated the building and, while inside her residence, found several suspicious items consistent with the manufacturing of methamphetamine, Mr. Murray said./pp“We got a search warrant from Potsdam Town Court based on the chemical burns, odors, and the items the fire guys saw inside the house,” Mr. Murray said./pp“We secured the perimeter and got the neighbors out, and called in the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team.”/ppOnce inside the home the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force and state emergency response team took evidence including reagents, solvents, catalysts and lab equipment for the manufacturing and production of methamphetamine. The evidence was brought to the state police lab in Albany for further investigation, Mr. Murray said./pp“We held the scene from about 1:35 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. when the search warrant was issued,” Mr. Murray said. “The scene was cleared at about 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.”/ppMr. Linsky was arraigned Tuesday in Potsdam Town Court Tuesday on the criminal contempt charge and was sent to St. Lawrence County jail on $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 bond. He was rearraigned Wednesday on the felony methamphetamine charge and was returned to jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond./ppMs. Volz was arraigned in Potsdam Court Wednesday and was released under the supervision of probation. /ppSt. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, state police and Potsdam Rescue Squad also assisted at the scene. /p
