DEC issues guidelines to avoid bear problems in residential areas

pThe state Department of Environmental Conservation urged residents to avoid encounters with black bears near their homes, primarily by removing potential food sources./pp“Nearly all negative bear encounters in New York are the result of hungry bears being attracted to human food sources,” the DEC said in a news release./ppThe DEC estimated that the state has about 6,000 to 7,000 bears that emerge from the winter denning period and need to replenish their nutrients and body fat, and who may travel long distances to preferred habitats./ppThe DEC said residents can avoid feeding bears by taking down bird feeders, securing grills and trash cans and feeding pets inside./ppMore information about bear encounters can be found at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6995.html./p
