CASTORLAND — A normal day working on her family’s farm turned tragic for a 13-year-old girl on Friday evening.

According to a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office news release, Mackenzie L. Abbott, of Old State Road, became entangled in a spinning shaft attached to a silage wagon while she was helping her father, “like she had done many times in the past” on the family farm at about 7 p.m.

She was rushed by ambulance to Lewis County General Hospital and flown shortly thereafter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she died of her injuries on Sunday.

Assisting at the scene of the accident were the Beaver Falls Ambulance, the New Bremen and Lowville Fire Departments, and the county Search and Rescue and Emergency Management departments.

A seventh-grader at Beaver River High School, Miss Abbott was a member of the modified track, volleyball and swim teams.

She was known by her parents, Heather M. and Shawn M. Abbott, her brother Mason and her sister Madison as “Kenzie Lou” and “Little Red.”

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Croghan Mennonite Church, Croghan. The funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Woodside Cemetery, Belleville.
