pCARTHAGE — Catholic Schools Week kicks off with the annual Mardi Gras fund raiser for Augustinian Academy./ppFollowing the national celebration of Catholic education theme — “Catholic Schools — A Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” Augustinian Academy’s celebration will highlight the school’s focus on faith development, academic excellence and dedication to community service. /ppEach day, Augustinian students will offer prayers for different groups and purposes including benefactors, families, students, faculty, staff and volunteers, mercy, vocations and “our nation and our community.”/pp“The theme highlights the fact that schools are not only communities themselves; they are also part of many other communities, including families, parishes, towns and our country,” said school principal Sister Annunciata Collins. “I am grateful every day for Father Robinson, our teachers, staff, education council members, parents and volunteers who make our school a success. Catholic Schools Week is a good time to thank them for their dedication and service.”/ppThe dinner/dance held at the Elks Lodge 1762, 511 Fulton St. begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, with cocktails. Dinner, with a choice of prime rib, grilled chicken or broiled fish will be served at 7 p.m. The opportunity for dancing follows until midnight with music provided by Zapet Vibrations./pp“I hope many people turn out for the Mardi Gras Gala,” said the Rev. Donald A. Robinson, pastor of St. James. “It is my first one and I’m excited! It is one of the major fundraisers for our Augustinian Academy and therefore an important parish/community event.”/ppThe mid-winter gala — which annually raises an average of $7,000 to aid the general operation of the school — was the brainchild of the late Sister John Mary Brockway, former principal of the local parochial school. /ppRaffles, including chances to win the contents of Mystery Treasure Boxes and a silent auction, will be held throughout the evening. Auction items include a variety of gift baskets./ppThose wishing to donate an item for the auction may drop it off at the school or call 493-1301 to arrange for pick up. The cost for the dinner/dance is $35 per person or $60 per couple with tickets available at the school, located at 317 West St., or by calling the school to reserve tickets./ppEvents schedule/ppspan class="bullet"n/span Monday: Academic quiz span class="bullet"n/span Tuesday: Pajama-clad students will share the joy of books throughout the school span class="bullet"n/span Wednesday: Students will attend Mass at either 8 a.m. or noon and the Rosary will be prayed by each class span class="bullet"n/span Thursday: The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is also Blue and Gold Day with students and staff encouraged to wear the school colors. There will be a Wellness Hour in the school gym from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. span class="bullet"n/span Friday: Red, White and Blue day at the school, with patriotic clothing encouraged. Following the 12:30 p.m. closing prayer service, there will be bingo until 1:30 p.m./p
