pWATERTOWN — State officials said they found a rabid skunk in Watertown, bringing the area’s count to seven since December./ppJefferson County Public Health officials said the skunk was found in the Gill Street area where four other rabid skunks have been found this season./ppThe department said the skunk was acting abnormally and was euthanized./ppThough no humans were exposed, a vaccinated dog may have come into contact with the skunk, and will require a booster shot./ppRabies is a disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord of mammals; symptoms can take weeks to months to appear./ppEarly treatment after an exposure to animals can help protect humans and animals up to date on vaccinations./ppThe department advised parents to keep children from unfamiliar animals, to avoid leaving pet food outside, to wash wounds from animal encounters thoroughly, to keep their pets’ vaccinations current and to monitor their pets while they are outside./p
